    When you exercise, however, you use muscle. This helps build muscle mass, and muscle tissue burns more calories — even when you’re at rest — than body fat.  The rule of thumb is that 10 pounds of muscle would burn 50 calories in a day spent at rest, while 10 pounds of fat would burn 20 calories.

    When you burn more calories than you consume, your body is forced to burn fat for energy.  While someone attempting to lose thigh fat, lose belly fat, or lose leg fat could succeed in his or her goal by simply consuming fewer calories than are burned by the body (the typical human body at rest burns 80 to 100 calories per hour), the addition of some level of exercise can help you burn more calories and thus permit you to achieve the same result faster or with a less calorically restrictive diet.
