    When Hollywood celebrities need to lose fat fast, the vast majority of them employ a diet  low in carbohydrates.  Popularized by Dr. Robert Atkins in his breakthrough book Dr. Atkins’ Diet Revolution in the early 1970’s, the Atkins diet turned thinking on weight loss on its head.  Unconcerned with ingestion of fat or calories for that matter, the Atkins diet was based on a research paper that Dr. Atkins read in the Journal of the American Medical Association.  Dr. Atkins used the information from this journal article to lose weight and keep it off for the remainder of his life.  To learn a safe and effective way to permanently lose weight, click here.

    I myself in struggles with my weight have utilized this diet to lose fat rapidly.  The fast fat loss secret of the Atkins diet is what Atkins termed its induction phase.  This initial phase of the Atkins diet is a ketogenic diet.  Ketogenic diets rely on the insulin response to blood glucose.  Because ketogenic dieters eat few carbohydrates, there is no glucose that can trigger the insulin response.  When there is no glucose-insulin response there are some hormonal changes that cause the stored fat to be used for energy.  Without getting too technical, the byproduct of the burned fat are ketones whose levels increase in the blood and are filtered by the kidneys.  If the dieter uses a ketone test strip or keto stick during urination, the stick will indicate the presence of ketones in the urine by changing color from flesh-colored to pink or various shades of purple.

    From personal experience, I can tell you that if your urine turns that stick a deep purple, your body is burning fat rapidly and you are losing fat fast.  I have lost as much as five pounds in a single day when I was in the condition referred to by Dr. Atkins as “benign dietary ketosis.”  This is how a Hollywood actor or actress who needs to lose weight rapidly for a movie role can lose 20 or 30 pounds in a relatively short time – as little as two or three weeks.

    What I like most about the Atkins diet was the ability to eat large quantities of food.  On this diet, if you are eating few enough carbohydrate grams daily, you needn’t be concerned with portions, calories, fat levels, or anything else that concerns the typical dieter when trying to lose fat fast.  By eating primarily meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, and some cheese, I was able to literally gorge myself and still lose weight.  And, when you are eating primarily protein, you virtually never feel hungry.  To lose weight without giving up foods you love, click here.

    Now, I’m sure you are thinking that if this diet was so wonderful, why would anyone ever go off of it?  Well, the fact of the matter is that for me and most people I know who have employed the Atkins or another variation of a low carb diet to lose weight fast, the overwhelming desire to eat bread, pasta, and other carbohydrate rich foods becomes like an obsession.  Even though I love steak and seafood, eating them everyday devoid of tasty sauces and side dishes like potatoes or pasta that are high in carbohydrates became torturous.

    If you want to know how to lose thigh fat fast or need to lose a quick 10 or 20 pounds to look your best for a special event, I would highly recommend the Atkins diet.  If you are to succeed with it, however, you must remember that virtually every food other than meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs contains some level of carbohydrate.  A potato, slice of white bread, or piece of fruit can keep you from getting to the state of “benign dietary ketosis” or take you out of it if you have achieved it.  To turn that keto stick deep purple, most people will need to eat virtually no carbohydrate content during the course of a day.  Even a diet soft drink contains 1 or 2 carbohydrate grams!  And, at the outset it will take from 3 to 5 days of extreme carbohydrate restriction to get into ketosis.

    So, my overall assessment of low carb dieting is that it can be extremely effective in the short term, but for long-term maintenance, it is a very difficult regimen to maintain.  For an easier weight loss program, click here.
